The animal supplement industry has no government regulatory agency. (What?! Yes, we speak the truth.) As of today, those that are regulated are feed products or drugs. That leaves health products/supplements (like us) somewhere in the middle.

Have you ever wondered what that little yellow NASC logo was on the bottom of our bags? The NASC stands for National Animal Supplement Council. The goal of the NASC is to promote the health and well-being of our pets as well as enhance the integrity of the animal health product industry. This is where we turn to in helping to be compliant with FDA/CVM.

We are proud to be sealed members of the NASC (and have been for over 8 years!) Being a sealed member means that we have to adhere to the NASC’s high quality standards, part of which requires an independent audit of our warehouse and manufacturing processes.

Here are a few examples of what you can expect from us as an NASC member:

• Product Recommendations
We get many of you calling in with questions or emailing questions to us wanting to know if our product will cure or treat their ailment. The truth is, we are unable to make those claims as we are not a drug company. Since our products are health products for horses and dogs we can only claim to support the natural structure/function of the body. This is how NASC defines it :

A product intended to support maintenance of normal biological structure and function in animals which are not intended for human consumption, such as dogs, cats and horses. These types of products are also called dosage form animal health products.

To put it simply, we cannot make claims on our product that are intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent. We can only provide support for the normal structure and function of the body. Make sense? So as much as we would love to tell you all the experiences our customers have had, we just can’t.  However, this is truly a good thing at the end of the day.  This prevents renegade companies from making outrageous claims that might end up with you being duped.

• Product Ingredients
Another great impact the NASC has had on the industry is bringing the quality of ingredients used in production to a higher standard. They help to ensure that sealed and audited members are only providing a top notch product made with only the ingredients that are listed on the label.

Believe it or not, but a lot of companies will withhold ingredients from their label or not have something in their product that they are advertising to have in their product.  With us being a NASC company you can ensure that everything that is on the label in in the product, nothing more, nothing less.  And that these ingredients are pure and potent.

• Social Media Postings
This one is a bummer to us because we love the interaction you guys have with us on our social media pages and tagging SLH in your posts! We are always happy to respond to your questions or comments. Please understand though, that if you make any type of claim and tag us in your post we are unable to recognize that with a “like” or comment. As much as we would like to, we simply can’t, because if we did, the FDA would see that as us confirming that our product did something beyond supporting the normal structure/function of the body.

We hope that this gives you an insight into the importants of that  little yellow sticker on the front of our packaging, and some of the challenges that come with being in the business that we are in.  We urge you to share this information with others, so that our industry can continue to be a safe and continue to support your horses in dogs in the highest of quality.
